Athletics: Ipswich Harriers senior men carried on with their winning ways from the 2001 track and field season when they took part in the first meeting of the East Anglian League at Norwich.

Ipswich Harriers senior men carried on with their winning ways from the 2001 track and field season when they took part in the first meeting of the East Anglian League at Norwich.

Still working solidly together, they convincingly won their individual section of the meeting, scoring 143 points to West Suffolk 87, Great Yarmouth 85, Diss 83, Norwich 55, Waveney 27 and Breckland 20.

It was good to see Ian Ling back in action after his considerable long spell off, due to injury. Ian came to the fore again covering four events, winning two and being second and third in the others.

In the 100ms he produced a time of 12.9 and in the 400ms 57.7, in the 200ms he was placed second and in the 3000ms third.

Steve Hicks competed in five events, winning the B string 200ms, being placed second in the javelin, third in the shot and fourth in both 3000m and discus.

Michael Fuller and Liam Rutter took their first meeting in the older age group in their stride. Michael took first places in both the 800ms and high jump, was third in the triple jump and javelin, and fourth in the discus.

Liam took third places in all three of his events which where the 800m, triple jump and long jump.

From the A string of the long jump Jermaine Bernard easily won the event then at the shot took a fourth place with 9.10ms.

Dan Scurrel, was second in the 400m and, to finish on a high, the men were first home in the 4x100m relay.

Like the Seniors, the Under-17 men also won their section, scoring 155.5. Norwich 112, West Suffolk 107, Waveney 46.5 and Diss 13.

From the 200ms Ben Higgins and Sean Foster took maximum points from the event and Ben also won the 400m in a pb time of 53.1.

It was in the 1500m that Joe Thompson returned a pb time of 4.35.7s when he won the event. In the long jump Martin Bennett and Ben Hanley both leapt the furthest to take another set of top points, and from the triple jump Luke Harris won the B string.

A pb came for Scott Stannard in the javelin with a throw of 30.62m and the win. In the hammer Scott was joined by Liam Smith when Liam's throw of 25.62m gave him a pb and also another pair of top points for the team.

Following the Senior men the Under-17 boys also took the 4x100m relay win.

Second overall place went to the Under-17 girls. Tasha Double came home first in both the 100m and 200m A strings. Carly Schumann won the B string 100ms and Sarah Morris tried her hand at the shot, finishing in third place, and for her first attempt at the 80m hurdles ran 15.3s.

Kirsty Thorndyke had a pb in the triple jump with 9.06m and ran the 300m in 46.7s, in the long jump Helen McGrath jumped 4.10ms for her best. Again it was Ipswich who won the 4x100m relay event.

The Under-15 boys, Under-13 and Under-15 girls all finished third in their groups. In the Under-15 girls, the 100m, 200msand long jump produced all the top marks. Emily Beckett won both A string wins in the 100ms and 200m. Rebeccah Mayo Jennings won the B string 100ms and Katie Barker the B string 200ms, and Lana Rogers and Chantelle Edwards won the long jump.

Lana also ran a good race in the B string of the hurdles timed at 13.5s and Kerry Fuller returned a pb in the discus which sailed out to 17.59m.

For the Under-15 boys, success went to Levi Hunt who went away with a pb to his credit. He ducked under the 60.0s mark for the first time in the 400ms with 59.9s. At the triple jump he gained his second best of the day when he leapt a winning 9.83m. In the B string of the event Jason Keveren also took the win and also had a pb with 9.43m.

In the shot Robert Harrington, on his first attempt at the event, put 6.50m, and Chris Pattle had a pb of 4.81m. James Hicks and Mark Dickenson had wins in both strings of the discus and javelin, with Mark's Discus throw of 22.99ms being a pb. In the hammer James took his first go at the event and finished in second place with 15.11m.

Graham Pattle also had a pb in the long jump with 4.27m and Aaron Pentellow Davis lowered his 400m time to 70.7s for his best.

Two first places went to the under-13 girls. Jenny Higgins won the B string 200m and Charlotte Webb the hurdles in 14.6 for her best. Second places came for Misha Cockrill Carden in the 800m and Joanne Harrell in the hurdles and from the long -ump Lois Rutter was third with a best of 3.84m.

Two new members, Alisha Keveren and S Moore took part in the jumps. Alisha long-jumped 3.32m and in the high-jump Sophie cleared 1.00m. The Under-13 girls also won their 4x100m relay.

Nathan Hanley had wins from two of his events in the Under-13 boys from the high jump and in the 100m 14.9 for a pb. Tom McCarthy was first home in the hurdles and from the 200m Andrew Jackson won the B string. In the 800ms he ran a pb of 2.32.8s for a second place.

S D'Allensandro, a new member, finished second in the 100ms in 15.ls and ran the 200m in 35.3. Yet another win for the boys came from the 4x100m relay.

Amy Wilson was home from university taking part in three events for the Senior Ladies, winning two and being second in the third.

There was a dismal turn out in the National Junior League from the members with only five ladies and three men. The ladies section finished fifth from six and the men's last of eight.

Congratulations go to Vicky Tunaley who won the 400m and was second in the discus, Hannah Coleman in the 100m, Sarah Plumb in the 100m and 400m, Sarah Thomas who was third for both discus and hammer. and there were also three fifth places to Sarah in the shot and Bethany Swan in the shot and javelin.

For the men, Chris McManus took third in the javelin, Neil Gillingham fourth in the discus and fifth in the 400m, and Sean Bennett fifth in the discus and seventh in the 100m.
