Hockey:HARLESTON Magpies Hockey Club will have a new water-based synthetic grass pitch in time for the start of the 2002-2003 season.This has been an ambition of the club for some years and the go-ahead for the project was given at a recent meeting of members when details of the fund raising campaign were given.
HARLESTON Magpies Hockey Club will have a new water-based synthetic grass pitch in time for the start of the 2002-2003 season.
This has been an ambition of the club for some years and the go-ahead for the project was given at a recent meeting of members when details of the fund raising campaign were given. Grants totalling £65,000 have been received very gratefully from Mid Suffolk and South Norfolk Councils and the Foundation for Sport and the Arts and an application has been made to the Sport England Lottery Fund in respect of the floodlights. The remainder of the £430,000 project will be funded by interest-free loans and donations from members, supporters and local businesses.
Andrew Longe, the club's president said: The new pitch will give a big boost to hockey in the Harleston area, and far beyond, and continues the club's policy of providing first class facilities for members and visitors and the many other users of our pitches from the local community".
The club, which is being advised by John Cadman Associates, has chosen Charles Lawrence Surfaces plc of Newark as the main contractors with separate contracts being awarded to Abacus Lighting Limited of Sutton-in-Ashfield and Prime Irrigation Ltd of Saxmundham.
Club sponsors Cotton and Downes Construction Ltd, of Laxfield near Woodbridge, have been engaged by Charles Lawrence Surfaces as sub-contractors responsible for the groundworks.
Charles Lawrence Surfaces are aiming to complete the pitch by the end of August and intend to use it as their showpiece installation for East Anglia.
"We are delighted to be working with Harleston Magpies Hockey Club to produce the best hockey pitch in the region. The materials and workmanship will be of the highest quality producing a playing surface with player comfort, safety and durability," said Simon Hall, Regional Manager for the main contractors.
