COLCHESTER were left clinging on for victory at Brighton last night having raced into an early two-goal lead.
A spectacular first U's goal from Phil Ifil and a close range header from Anthony Wordsworth within the first 15 minutes put the Essex side firmly in control.
However, Brighton came storming back to halve the deficit just before half-time through Gary Dicker's header and they then pressed hard for an equaliser in the second period.
In the end a combination of poor finishing and fine goalkeeping from Ben Williams just about kept the U's in front for their third away victory in the league this season.
The result sees Aidy Boothroyd's side temporarily leapfrog East Anglian rivals Norwich City into third place in the League One table ahead of today's fixtures.
