THE second day of The Suffolk Closed Junior Championships saw the introduction of the top seeds in the boys' 14-and-under and 16-and-under singles as well as the girls' 12-and-under singles. The other top players will be in action today as they try to continue the trend of dominance shown in yesterday's matches.
In the boys' 14-and-under competition the top three seeds soared through their opening matches losing just three games between them. Matthew Hough, Ashley Watling and Ben-Roberts-Law all looked to be in good form as they transferred their game to the hardcourt surface having spent much of the competitive summer on grass.
Roberts-Law and Hough also played in the 16-and-under singles and along with Mark Cooper made sure that the top three will be involved in the quarter-finals.
One of the performances of the day came from Richard King who, having not played in a competitive tournament for two years, looked solid as he defeated Matt Garman in straight sets. The 17-year-old from Ipswich still trains and is involved in the Ipswich junior squad, however, he is also a cycling enthusiast which has taken up most of his time. King also hopes to pass the tennis assistance course this year so he can become a coach, and his concentration will need to be firmly on his tennis today as he faces No. 1 seed Kevin Mee in the quarter-finals of the 18-and-under singles.
In the girls' twelve-and-under singles the top four seeds all sailed through the second round. Perri Daniel, Kari Sherington and Robyn White all stamped authority on their respective matches as they went through comfortably, losing only four games between them. No. 2 seed Holly Sherington had a tricky first set as her opponent Georgina Rush battled hard. Sherington, however, came through to win 7-5 and then dominate the second set to win 6-1.

With all the age groups now rounded up to the quarter-final stage today's play should provide some exciting matches.
In the boys' section key matches to look out for will be Harry Mayhew against Alexander Beynon in the 12-and-under singles and Ben Roberts-Law versus Joseph Davis in the 14-and-under age group.
In the girls' competition Grace Hutson's match against Saskia Toppin will be one to look out for. Hutson is the defending champion yet un-seeded Toppin has recently reached the semi-finals at Framlingham as well as the final of the 16-and-under age group.
All in all today's play should produce some lively tennis with the chance of some shocks becoming increasingly likely.
