EXPERIENCED defender Mark Venus, freed by Ipswich, is on his way to Cambridge United.

The 36-year-old has agreed a one-year deal with Abbey Stadium boss John Taylor and the move will be completed once he undergoes a medical.

Venus knocked back an offer from Peterborough to continue his career with Cambridge, which will avoid having to uproot his family from their Dedham base.

The former Hartlepool, Leicester and Wolves player made 184 appearances for Town in six seasons at Portman Road.

He was the supporters' choice as player of the year for the 2001-2002 season.
