Thousands of people took part in the first Ipswich Weekender this year, enjoying a range of free activities across the town.

The event showed a 27% increase in footfall compared to last weekend – when Ipswich Town were playing at home.

Ipswich Weekender offered sixteen free attractions for kids and adults between Friday, March 10 and the following Sunday.

Sunny weather ensured that outdoor activities could be fully enjoyed by Ipswich residents, as 600 people experienced the climbing wall and 500 tried caving on the Cornhill.

The historic Ancient House saw 2,100 visitors and 500 books were given away from Ipswich Town Hall.

David Ellesmere, Ipswich Borough Council leader, said: “Footfall figures show there were many more people in Ipswich town centre this weekend compared to the previous one, despite Town playing away.

“This shows that events can and will encourage people to enjoy the town centre. We look forward to planning more Weekenders, as well as smaller events, later this year.

“Our next big Weekender will be at the start of July based around the ever-popular Ipswich Music Day on 2 July.”
