A care facility in Ipswich evacuated its patients on Monday morning after a gas leak.

Staff at the BrainKind care facility, in Chantry, noticed and reported a "strong chemical odour" and experienced "irritation to their eyes", leading them to call the fire service.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service responded just after 5.30am to the facility and evacuated patients with hospital staff to a safe area.

After monitoring, it was confirmed that a refrigerator was leaking refrigerant gas, causing elevated levels of ammonia.

Three crews attended the scene to support breathing apparatus operations.

The fire service ventilated the premises and removed the leaking fridge to a safe area outside of the building.

A spokesman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said: "The decisive actions of fire crews ensured a safe resolution of the incident with no harm to patients and minimal disruption to the hospital’s operations.

"The scene was declared safe and handed back to the responsible person, with a recommendation to have the fridge removed by a competent contractor."

The East of England Ambulance Service also attended the scene and the fire service confirmed there is no wider community impact.
