The controversial £20,000 electric road signs in Ipswich will no longer “continuously” display safety messages, council chiefs have confirmed.
Five variable message signs (VMS) were built on key routes around the town in October last year, displaying traffic and safety information. The project cost £100,000 in total.
But Star readers criticised the road signs, which displayed safety messages such as reminding motorists to wear seatbelts and to be aware of cyclists. Some claimed they “distracted drivers”.
A Suffolk County Council spokesman said: “The matrix signs are to alert road users of emerging incidents and events that they need to be made aware of. It was never the intention for them to show messages continuously. They are adaptable to the circumstances required.”
